Watering rhythm
Every 14–21 days
Aloe vera is a succulent native to South Africa. Its thick, fleshy leaves store water, allowing it to thrive even in dry conditions. Thanks to its distinctive appearance and easy-care nature, it's a favorite for indoor gardening—perfect for beginners.
Aloe vera does best in a bright spot with good air circulation. It loves direct sunlight, though you'll want to protect it from intense western sun in mid-summer. Aim for temperatures between 10–30°C (50–86°F). In cold climates, move it indoors during winter. Avoid humidity and keep the air moving around it.
Light and temperature change a plant's metabolism, so the ideal cadence shifts with the seasons.

Water thoroughly once the soil has dried out completely. Check the surface of the soil with your finger to confirm it's truly dry before watering again. Never water while the soil is still moist, as this invites root rot. Water until it flows from the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot.
Quick lookup from symptom to likely cause and action.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Leaves turn translucent or white and feel soft | Root rot from overwatering, especially common in winter | Stop watering immediately and move the plant to a well-ventilated spot. If rot has progressed, remove the plant from its pot, trim away the rotted roots, and repot it in fresh soil. |
| Leaves turn brown, dry, and crispy | Extended periods without water or very dry indoor air | Water thoroughly until the soil is well moistened. Then return to your normal watering schedule and improve air circulation around the plant. |
| Leaves droop and the whole plant looks limp | Either root rot or damage from prolonged dryness | Check the soil moisture—if it's dry, water; if it's wet, improve ventilation. If the plant doesn't recover, consider repotting. |
| Small brown insects appear on the plant (scale insects) | Poor air circulation or high humidity | Wipe the affected areas gently with a soft cloth, and use an insecticidal spray if needed. Then improve air circulation and light exposure. |
| Leaves turn yellow and die off from the bottom up | Natural aging of lower leaves, or possibly insufficient nutrients | Remove the dead leaves. Feed with diluted liquid fertilizer once or twice a month during spring and fall. |
