Scindapsus is a trailing vine from the Arum family, native to Southeast Asia. Known for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves, it's a wonderfully forgiving plant perfect for beginners. It thrives in low light, making it a versatile choice for almost any room in your home.
Bright indirect light is ideal, but this plant is quite adaptable and will grow in dimmer spots too. Keep temperatures above 15°C, with 20–25°C being optimal. Humidity between 50–70% is nice to have, though it does fine in normal indoor conditions. Just avoid placing it directly in air conditioning drafts.
Light and temperature change a plant's metabolism, so the ideal cadence shifts with the seasons.

Water thoroughly once the soil surface feels dry to the touch, and always empty any water that collects in the saucer. If the leaves start looking dull, a gentle misting will perk them right up and restore their shine. This plant likes a bit of moisture, so be careful not to let it dry out completely between waterings.
Quick lookup from symptom to likely cause and action.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Leaves turning yellow | Either the soil is staying too wet and roots are beginning to rot, or the plant is going through a dry spell. | If overwatering is the issue, reduce watering frequency and improve air circulation. Remove any yellowed leaves and give the plant time to recover. |
| Leaves wilting and losing vigor | Soil that stays constantly wet prevents roots from breathing, leading to root rot. | Check that drainage holes at the base of the pot are clear and allow the soil to dry out a bit. If needed, consider repotting into fresh soil. |
| Stems turning brown and becoming soft | High humidity combined with cool temperatures creates conditions where stem diseases can develop. | Use clean scissors to remove the affected parts, then improve air circulation around the plant. Moving it to a warmer location can also help. |
| Leaf color fading and slow growth | The plant may not be getting enough light, or it could be lacking nutrients. | Try moving it to a brighter spot. During the growing season (spring through fall), feed with diluted liquid fertilizer every two weeks. |
| Aphids or spider mites appearing | These pests thrive in dry air and poor air circulation. | Mist the leaves regularly to maintain humidity, and spray water on both sides of affected leaves as soon as you spot them. If the problem persists, consider using a plant-safe pesticide. |
