Peace lilies are tropical houseplants native to Central and South America, beloved for their elegant white spathes that look like flowers. They're shade-tolerant and perfect for beginners—they're naturally hardy and forgiving. They do appreciate some humidity, but they're wonderfully easy to care for overall.
Bright indirect light is ideal, though they'll happily grow in partial shade too. Just avoid direct sun. Keep temperatures between 16–30°C (61–86°F), and try not to let them drop below 10°C (50°F). Humidity above 50% is beneficial; misting the leaves regularly will keep them happy.
Light and temperature change a plant's metabolism, so the ideal cadence shifts with the seasons.

Water when the soil surface begins to dry out. Peace lilies are sensitive to drought and will droop if left too dry, so aim to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Avoid letting water sit in the saucer, and make sure your pot has good drainage. They'll really appreciate regular misting too.
Quick lookup from symptom to likely cause and action.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Leaves are drooping or wilting | Either the soil has dried out too much, or the roots can't absorb water due to root rot. Peace lilies really don't like being dry. | If the soil is dry, water thoroughly until the whole pot is moist. If you suspect root rot, consider repotting into fresh, well-draining soil. |
| Leaves are turning yellow | This usually signals root rot or the stress of being too dry or overwatered. Winter overwatering is especially risky. | If root rot is the culprit, repot the plant. Check that your pot has drainage holes and use fresh soil. Inspect the roots—they should be pale, not black. |
| Leaf tips are browning | Low humidity or salt buildup from minerals in your water. The air around your plant may be too dry. | Mist the leaves daily to raise humidity. If possible, use filtered water, or occasionally flush the soil with water to clear out accumulated salts. |
| Pests appear (spider mites or mealybugs) | Low humidity and poor air circulation create ideal conditions for these pests to thrive. | Check the undersides of leaves. Increase humidity and monitor closely. If the infestation is severe, treat with insecticidal soap or gently wipe the leaves clean. |
| The plant isn't flowering | Insufficient light or an unstable growing environment can prevent blooming. | Move it to a brighter spot with indirect light. Use a pot that's large enough for the roots to establish well, and make sure the plant has access to steady nutrients. |
