Watering rhythm

Sedum is the quintessential succulent, instantly recognizable by its plump, fleshy leaves. Found across the globe, these plants thrive in dry conditions and are wonderfully easy to care for. Most species originate from the Northern Hemisphere, with heights and colors varying by type. They're an excellent choice for beginners—these are genuinely tough plants.
Sedum loves bright light. When it receives 4 or more hours of direct sunlight daily, the foliage develops richer colors. These plants are cold-hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to around 5°C, though 10°C and above is ideal during winter. They prefer low humidity.
Light and temperature change a plant's metabolism, so the ideal cadence shifts with the seasons.

The golden rule: water only after the soil has dried out completely. Since sedums store water in their leaves and stems, overwatering is the quickest path to root rot. Wait until the soil surface turns white and dry, then water thoroughly. Make sure excess water doesn't sit in the saucer.
Quick lookup from symptom to likely cause and action.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Leaves become soft and wilted | Too much water or poorly draining soil. Sedum despises wet conditions. | Stop watering immediately and move the pot to a well-ventilated spot. If root rot has progressed, consider repotting. |
| Leaves look pale and thin | Insufficient light. Sedum is a sun-lover, and low light causes stretched, weak growth. | Move it to a brighter location with longer daylight hours and stronger light—a sunny windowsill or outdoor spot works well. |
| Leaves turn brown and wilt | Temperatures are too cold, or sudden temperature swings have stressed the plant. Winter in cold climates requires extra care. | Move it to a warm indoor location where it stays above 10°C. Choose a spot away from drafts. |
| Small insects visible on the plant | Aphids or scale insects, which tend to appear during warm spring and summer months. | Gently wipe off the insects with a soft cloth, or rinse them away with diluted insecticide. Early intervention is most effective. |
| Stems become mushy and rot | Overwatering combined with poor air circulation. Good airflow is essential for sedum. | Use clean scissors to remove the rotted sections, then allow the plant to dry out. Place it in a well-ventilated area and be patient while it recovers. |
