About this plant

Staghorn ferns are instantly recognizable by their distinctive flat shield-like leaves and fork-shaped fertile fronds that resemble deer antlers. These are epiphytic ferns native to tropical rainforests in Australia and Africa, where they naturally grow on tree branches. Plant enthusiasts love them for their striking appearance and surprisingly manageable care requirements.

Placement & environment

Staghorn ferns thrive in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun exposure—filtered light through a sheer curtain works beautifully. They prefer temperatures between 15–25°C (59–77°F), so keep them away from anything colder than 10°C. Humidity is important: aim for 50–70% to keep them happy.

Seasonal watering rhythm

Light and temperature change a plant's metabolism, so the ideal cadence shifts with the seasons.

Watering rhythm

The flat shield leaves naturally collect and hold water, so resist the urge to drench them—a gentle misting is all you need. Regular misting of the fertile fronds will encourage healthy growth. Water when the soil surface feels dry to the touch, but be cautious of overwatering. Adjust your routine based on the season and your home's conditions.

Common troubles

Quick lookup from symptom to likely cause and action.

SymptomLikely causeWhat to try
Leaves turning brown and crispyToo much direct sunlight or prolonged dry air in the environment.Move it to filtered light behind a sheer curtain, and mist regularly to boost humidity. Make sure air can circulate around the plant.
Soft, mushy stems and root rotWatering too frequently, using soil that doesn't drain well, or giving too much water during winter months.Cut back on watering frequency and never let the soil stay constantly wet. If needed, repot into better-draining soil.
No new leaves appearingInsufficient light, temperatures dropping too low, or a lack of nutrients.Move it to a brighter spot with indirect light, and maintain temperatures above 15°C. During spring and summer, feed with diluted liquid fertilizer once or twice a month.
Dark spots or discoloration on leavesMold thrives in overly humid, stagnant air, or when water sits on the leaves too long.Improve air circulation around the plant and gently wipe the leaves dry after misting. Strike a better balance between humidity and airflow.
Shield leaves staying small and not developing wellHumidity levels are too low, light is insufficient, or the plant isn't getting enough nutrients.Keep humidity above 50%, ensure it receives plenty of bright indirect light, and feed with diluted fertilizer during the growing season.
