About this plant

Lemon balm is a fragrant herb from the mint family, native to Europe. It's known for its fresh, lemony scent and is wonderfully easy to grow indoors, making it perfect for beginners. The leaves are a bright green color and release their lovely aroma whenever you touch them. It's a hardy plant with vigorous growth.

Placement & environment

A sunny windowsill is ideal. It will grow in partial shade, but the fragrance tends to become less pronounced. Aim for temperatures between 10–25°C (50–77°F). In cold winter climates, keeping it indoors is recommended. Standard indoor humidity levels work fine.

Watering rhythm

Water thoroughly once the soil surface feels dry to the touch. Always empty any water that collects in the saucer beneath the pot. Avoid letting the soil stay constantly wet, as this can lead to root rot. During the growing season, the plant does enjoy moisture, but dial it back in winter and keep things on the drier side. Checking the soil daily will help you get the hang of it quickly.

Stems become thin and stretch out	When light is scarce, the plant stretches to reach it, resulting in weak, leggy growth.	Move it somewhere brighter. Prune back the leggy stems, leaving 2–3 nodes from the tip, to encourage fuller growth. You can even pop the cuttings in water to propagate new plants.
